Demand Response Device (DRED) - Dynamic Ratings

Demand Response Device (DRED)

DRED

Dynamic Ratings’ Demand Response Device (DRED) provides a flexible IoT interface to allow remote control of supported
network loads and distributed generation. Control output options include a dry contact relay output or AS4755/AS4777
compliant digital outputs, enabling control of equipment such as:

  • Air conditioners
  • Swimming pool pumps
  • Electric water heaters
  • Electric vehicle chargers
  • Battery storage

Based on the Dynamic Ratings ConnectGrid™ smart infrastructure solution, the DRED is a flexible solution for demand response applications, and enables intelligent automatic control of connected distributed energy resources allowing utilities to balance generation and load.

Integrated Communication Technologies

The DRED has been designed to take advantage of the latest Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) communication technologies. This includes the ability to leverage your existing AMI communications investment or take advantage of the latest Telecommunication Provider offerings including Cat M1 or NB IoT. LPWAN technologies offers decreased power usage, increased range and lower capital and operational costs than traditional communication technologies that are being phased out (e.g. Dial-up / 3G etc.).

Secure, Open-standards Enterprise Architecture

Unlike offerings that receive commands from a propriety central control, the DRED is centered on a secure, open-standards enterprise architecture. The architecture supports cloud-based IoT platforms such as AWS or Azure, or on-premise servers.

Example Applications

Control Air Conditioners and Pool Pumps
Control loads in real time using voltage measurements from around the network or load measurements from distribution network substations. A closed loop demand response improves network utilization.

Integrate with a DERMS or ADMS System (via DNP3 or IEEE2030.5)
Integrate controllable load and generation into your automated network control and management systems. Shed load during system events or faults and keep the lights on.

Manage load when directed or using local schedule
The built-in scheduling engine allows users to automate local control of loads which can reduce opex costs. Users can override the system as necessary.
