Not all transformers are equipped with an On Load Tap Changer (OLTC). However for applications where local voltage adjustments are required this is a mechanical moving component which can wear out over time. Knowing when to do maintenance, or repairs is an important function to maintain reliability of the transformer function and avoid unexpected failures. A recent CIGRE study (TB 642) on Transformer Reliability, detailed that 31% of major transformer failures where attributed to the unexpected failure of the OLTC. Applications may include industrial (arc furnace), utility (transmission or distribution system), or Generation (GSU).

This pre-recorded webcast will focus on the common failure modes of the two main types of OLTC’s: those that are attached to the side of the transformer tank (External type), and those that are Internal type installed in the main tank. Using FMEA techniques, we will explore and share the results of various technologies that can be deployed to detect the symptoms of these failure modes before unexpected failures can occur.
