Condition monitoring technologies capture operational data which characterize a transformers’ vital signs. This data enables diagnostic techniques for the assessment of a transformers’ condition. Monitors deliver a variety of observable variables for the detection of incipient failures within the transformer and its components. However, the unique nature of some condition monitor and sensor technologies means that utility and plant operations personnel can find themselves presented with unfamiliar data sets.
Many owners who have successfully implemented monitoring strategies have accumulated vast amounts of extremely useful information on the behaviour of their fleets. This enables them to classify candidates and set priorities for repair/rectification of minor failures, refurbishment/replacement and availability of spare units. Properly managing this data is critical to identify what limiting factors may impede plans and ultimately crucial to the success of asset management as whole.
